About Rishikesh

Rishikesh also spelled Hrishikesh, Rushikesh, or Hrushikesh, is a growing city in Uttaranchal or Uttarakhand. It is the gateway to the Himalayas and is located 20 kms from the sacred city of Haridwar in Northern India. It attracts lacs of pilgrims and tourists each year, from not just the other states of India but also from other countries. Rishikesh also known as "Teerth Nagri" or "Yog Nagri", which means "City of Temples, Yoga and Meditation".

I thought it was something to do with a saints hair - "Rishi" + "Kesh" = "Rishikesh"

That gives some insight...

  1. The Holy Chardham yatra starts from Rishikesh. It is a place which attract different people for different reasons, most famous of which is yoga. The YOGA week is held every year in the month of February and devotees and solace seekers from across the world come to Rishikesh for the same. Apart from the sanctity of the place it is a great heaven for trekkers and adventurers to start their treks to mighty Himalayas or to try and feel the thrill of river rafting in Ganga. This rafting stretch is considered to be one of the oldest ones in India.

  2. "Hṛṣīkeśa" (Sanskrit: हृषीकेश) is another name for Lord Vishnu which means 'lord of the senses'. It is believed that Lord Vishnu appeared to 'Raibhya Rishi', because Lord Vishnu was impressed by his tapasya (austerities), so the place was named as Lord Hrishikesh. The Skanda Purana has this story and in that this place is known as 'Kubjamrak' as Lord Vishnu appeared, under a mango tree.
